7. Storyboard

Based on the personas, especially Anne, we developed a narrative storyboard, illustrating our interactive spaces in the library and how they help the visitors to use the library in a more joyful and also efficient way. This storyboard is meant to support the presentation of the 3D-Prototype and is specified to it.

Introducing the User

Anne is a 36-year old woman living in Mülheim with her husband Frank and her 4-year-old daughter Emily. She works half-day as assistant in an attorneys office. Besides playing with her daughter, Anne loves going to theatrical plays. During her secretary job she works permanently on the computer. She also owns a personal computer at home, but does not use it very frequently. Normally the computer is just turned on when she has some actual matters to do, like informing about the holidays or shopping clothes for her and her family. She also owns a handy, but its not one of the modern ones, as a telephone should serve to talk to someone over the phone and not more things. Anne likes to visit the local library with her daughter, especially during the week in the evenings, before Frank comes from work. Visiting the library is therefore most of the time searching for books for Emily, depending on the story Emily is addicted to at the moment. Now it is fairytales and princesses, but this changes every week. Sometimes, Anne visits the library with the whole family at the weekends. During these visits, while Frank is watching Emily, Anne browses for books for herself, normally those covering stage plays or stories of actors.

Anne and her family are entering the library

Anne enters the room and looks at the wall displays And there are arrows on the floor
Wall displays show related items of: There are three blue arrows indicating the direction to relevant books about:
- current Twitter trends - The top-twitter trend tag
- Mean-charts of popular online book stores (e.g. Amazon) -The top online-sold book
- Top-News from major news websites - The latest news item

She notices the augmented table

The augmented table is illuminated from the beamer above him. Anne steps near the table, which responds starting from 3 meter distance. The augmented circle around the table is showing arrows pointing to the table. She goes to the table and the augmenting stops. The table now shows the start screen of the browsing application for the themes of the week. Now Anne browses through the book inventory of the library searching for theatrical plays and books about stories of actors. During the interaction with the system the augmented circle shows arrows, which are pointing to recommended books based on the actual selected theme. Anne has the following options with the search results:

  • load a bunch of results on her mobile device (automatic recognition of mobile device near table), but sadly she has none.
  • select one result to get routed to it

If Anne had a smartphone: Interaction with the smartphone

Every registered visitor has a library application and an online account. The mobile device is connected with help of the account to the libraries system from the moment the visitor enters the library (using e.g. NFC). If the visitor has selected one specific book, the system automatically will root him to this book starting from the activation point. It’s of course possible to select a book in the internet and get routed to this book from the moment of the entrance of the library.

Anne is still not convinced and wants a personal recommendation

Therefore she goes to the information kiosk and waits until a picture of her is taken. The system will identify her by her face. If Anne is new, she’s invited to enter her:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Fields of interests

Afterwards the System will show a list of possibly interesting items for Anne, based on her previous rentals and the given personal information. She now is able to select one item and will see a red arrow on the floor which indicates the direction to this item for 10 seconds.

Anne follows the red arrow to the bookshelf and puts it out of it. When she opens the book, it gets augmented.

Found an interesting book - what do others say?

Books are marked with some invisible token. When someone opens a book and keeps it in front of him within a labeled area, additional information will be projected to the pages. They include:

  • User reviews and ratings from the internet.
  • Related news articles.
  • Youtube videos (e.g. movie trailers in case there is a movie about that book).
