Sketching Techniques: From interacting with Paper to Simple Animation

Sketching during the development of a new technology doesn't mean just drawing. It means very much more. As long as you keep in mind that you are sketching for developing new ideas and not necessarily for refining existing ones, use everything for your sketch that comes to your mind.

There are several methods, from using paper across three dimensional sketches to digital animation. Just figure out, which one fits the purpose of your project the best.

1. Interacting with Paper
In this chapter you get an overview of how to sketch user experience with paper and pencil. Beside the method of static sketches that are like snapshots of your future system, we'll have a deeper look on bringing dynamics to paper sketches.

2. 3D-Sketches
This chapter provides you with some basic ideas what sketching else could be, bringing your sketches in a three-dimensional shape. After presenting some techniques with foam core, it delivers an insight in what can be made possible by using and combining different materials to collages.

3. Simple Animation
The last chapter breaks with the analog sketching methods and gives an overview of how we could use simple animation methods to sketch our ideas. Beside presenting the manual and digital techniques of creating flipbooks, it illustrates how this could be further extended to stopmotion videos. Finally we come up with some ideas how to use presentation programs to enhance the user experience of our sketches.
